Protecting Florida’s Beaches - 2 New Laws
The Weekly Challenger
Originally posted 7/8/2010

Pensacola - Recently Attorney General Bill McCollum was in Pensacola to participate in the Oil Spill Economic Recovery Task Force meeting and host a review of new technologies that would potentially help with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill catastrophe. McCollum also announced the Florida Crisis Response Team is on standby and ready to be deployed to assist the communities affected by the spill. The response team is made up of more than 800 crisis responders statewide and provides crisis assistance to communities who are impacted by a disaster event. On July 2, two important laws took effect, one of which may be particularly relevant in the potential for litigation to obtain recoveries resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The Transparence in Private Attorney Contracting law will help ensure that the maximum amount of money recovered through any contingency fee-based award will go directly to those affected by this disaster. “We must continue calling for BP and the federal authorities to give Florida the resources needed to minimize the damage to our beaches. Our state is experiencing great need, and it is critical that we get the assistance we deserve”, said McCollum.
